If a move is in your future, it can be a stressful time. But preparation is key to making sure it all goes seamlessly. Check out these top 20 moving tips and the whole process will be a breeze.

1. Place the most important everyday items you will require right away in clear bins for ease of use. These items include toilet paper, phone chargers, power strips, plastic utensils, napkins, trash bags and essential cookware.
2. Instead of wasting money on bubble wrap, pack your dishes in cotton shirts and your stemware in socks.
3. Use the storage you already have instead of procuring lots of boxes, such as suitcases, laundry baskets, and decorative woven baskets for storage.
4. Write the rooms on your boxes. Sure, you can label each box with the contents, but you should also write where the boxes should be placed, such as the office and master bedroom.
5. Pack an overnight bag with essential items such as laptop, phone, a change of clothes and some toiletries. This way you can easily grab these things the morning after a move without rifling through boxes.
6. Use plastic wrap to cover your toiletries such as lotions and liquids, then place the caps back on. Alternatively, throw them all in zipped plastic bags so if the contents spill out during transport, nothing will get ruined.
7. Stack dishes vertically in boxes rather than one on top of the other so they won’t break as easily.
8. Stretch wrap multiple boxes together for easier relocation.
9. Put any screws and curtain rods in small baggies to keep those small parts together.
10. Place all hanging clothing in a trash bag from the bottom up so you don’t even have to fold your clothes or take them off the hangers.
11. Using color coded masking tape, labeling your boxes by destination for easy decoding by your movers and friends.
12. Take a photo of the wiring for your TVs and computers so you can refer back to it when putting them together at the new house.
13. When it comes to large items like pianos and fragile items, hire a professional moving company. While friends may be well-meaning, they don’t have the experience and supplies that a professional mover does.
14. Post anything you want to sell or give away on sites like eBay and Craigslist about a month before your move so you don’t have to worry about packing these items come moving day.
15. Same for donations: have the charity come pick them up a week or two before moving.
16. It’s a good idea to call the movers or your friends to help only AFTER you have packed and labeled everything. No one wants to wait around while you finish the last of your packing.
17. Don’t go grocery shopping the last two weeks before the move, to avoid having to throw out lots of food.
18. Hire a babysitter the day of the move so your kids and pets don’t get in the way.
19. A week or two before you move, change your address so everything’s all set once you’re in your new place.
20. Map out the logistics of your move if you’re doing it yourself with a van so the day of the event goes smoothly.

Moving day can certainly be a harrowing time, but when you’re prepared, you know you’ve got this!
