Cub Scout Pack 66 wins 1st Place in Klondike Derby, Webelos Division

Cub Scout Pack 66 is proud to announce that the Rattlin’ Ravens won 1st place in the Klondike Derby Webelos Division with a grand total of 152 points out of a possible 185!

Matawan - Aberdeen Cub Scout Pack 66 sent 6 boys to Quail Hill Scout Reservation on Saturday January 19th, to participate in the Twin Lights District 2013 Klondike Derby.  . The Klondike Derby is an annual outdoor winter event , in which each sled team must visit 6-8 Alaskan “Towns” and work together as a team to solve problems and practice various scenarios. The Mayor of each Town then scores the team and at the end of the day the sled with the most points wins bragging rights.

The boys from Pack 66 - Scotty H., Charlie R., Alexander B., Dean C., Garret C. and Timothy F., also known as the Rattlin’ Ravens,  had to push/pull a sled weighing in at just over 80lbs and filled with equipment they would need for the day such as first aid kit, firewood, matches, blanket, firestarter, tongs, aluminum foil, food handling gloves, water, lunch, and other materials deemed necessary by the “Governor” of the Derby.

Led by Den Leaders Charles Ritchie and Lisa Harrington, the boys visited the Town of Kaltag where they had to work together without talking to direct another boy to perform various tasks. Next up was Fairbanks, where the boys had to perform First Aid on several “victims” of their team who suffered from concussions, sprains and frostbite. After working on their knot tying skills at Whitehorse, the boys took a break at the Soup Kitchen for some hot nourishment. Then it was on to Ft. Yukon, by far the best Town of the day, where the scouts worked together to build a fire large enough to burn through a string 12” above the base. Next up was a visit to Anchorage where they performed three different Ice Rescues to pull a teammate to safety. Last visit of the day was to Nome, where the scouts learned to cook a hot dog inside a ½ gallon juice container!

The Scout thoroughly enjoyed themselves, learned to work together and had a great experience. Even the parents that followed along had an enjoyable time and said the best part was watching the boys figure out what to do on their own.  Congrats to the Webelos, job well done Scouts!
