Group Drops Suit Of School Over 'Under God' In Pledge of Allegiance

American Humanist Association, which sued Matawan-Aberdeen schools, said it won't appeal a judge's ruling rejecting the suit.

The organization that had unsuccessfully tried to have the words “under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance in local schools has dropped its legal battle against the Matawan-Aberdeen school district, according to a published report.

The American Humanist Association had 45 days to file an appeal of a state Superior Court judge’s decision to dismiss the lawsuit, but that deadline has passed and no appeals have been filed, according to an APP.com report.

Merrill Miller, a spokeswoman for the American Humanist Association, which represents atheists and other non-religious groups, also confirmed that no appeal was planned, the APP.com report said.

The American Humanist Association filed the initial lawsuit last year, on behalf of a family from Aberdeen.

But in February, Judge David Bauman sitting in Freehold, dismissed the lawsuit, ruling that the reference to God was more a declaration of patriotism than religious beliefs, according to NJ.com.
