Lady Huskies Make MRHS History with State Semi-Final Win

They will advance to the Central Jersey Group 3 finals on Thursday

Heading into half time against the Ocean Township Spartans with a score of 1-0, the state semi-final game was not looking good for the Huskies.

Despite screams of encouragement from packed bleachers and multiple shots on goal, the Huskies were not able to get the ball in the net during the first forty minutes against Ocean.

The girls marched with heads down into the ten minute time out between halves, and came back with a revival of spirit and heart, noted Head Coach Ken McCabe.

Krista Conzo, a senior, scored only minutes into the the half, putting the Huskies back in the game. The two teams battled up and down the field, fighting fiercly for the win. Rebecca Labinger, a senior, scored a second goal and then Conzo kicked in a third goal to put the Huskies safely in the lead with fifteen minutes left in the game.

McCabe said he was proud of the ladies' teamwork and the support of the fans.

"The girls had a lot of heart," McCabe said. "The total team effort was really great and we're grateful for the support from the students and administrators."

The team will play away in the Central Jersey Group 3 finals on Thursday. This is the first time any soccer team at Matawan Regional High School made it to the state semi-finals in the school's history, McCabe said.
