MRHS Key Club Recognized For Community Service Efforts

Members were honored at the Sept. 26 Board of Education meeting

Matawan Regional High School Principal recognized the members of the high school's Key Club at the Board of Education meeting Sept. 26 for their dedication to the community.

The Key Club is a philanthropic organization that does service projects on the local and national level. The high school's chapter contains 70 active student members and was started fifteen years ago, Principal Michele Ruscavage said.

Ruscavage praised the club, commending them as an integral part of the community.

"The key club has collected clothing, food and toys for Manna House, which is a local home providing homeless women and their children a safe shelter and support," she said. "Our students have collected toys for our local shelters and for our local children's hospital at the Jersey Shore Medical Center."

According to Ruscavage, the club also participates in an annual walk-a-thon for the Kidney and Neurology Foundation and for Autism Speak. Students also raise money through bake sales to provide a scholarship to a select graduation member in addition to sending packages, cards and letters to members of the United States Military stationed in Iraq.

Members of the service organization also began a reading club. They travel to the elementary schools and read to younger students, Ruscavage said.

All of the members where recognized, and the officers of the club recieved certificates from the Board of Education, as a thank you to the students for their dedication to serving the community.
