PARLIN, NJ — A 17-year-old Parlin teen who admitted to breaking into a woman's home and sexually assaulting her last Halloween has now been sentenced as an adult for the crime.

The home invasion and sex assault happened on Oct. 31, 2022.

Jermaine Marshall, 17, of Parlin, previously pleaded guilty in January to aggravated sex assault and burglary.

Sometime between midnight and 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2022 Marshall entered the victim’s apartment — located on Swider Drive in Parlin — by climbing through a bedroom window. He sexually assaulted her and then fled the scene.

The woman was 68 years old. He also stole unspecified items from her home, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Sayreville Police Chief Daniel Plumacker.

Marshall was taken into police custody later that same day, Oct. 31.

At the time of his arrest Marshall was 16 years old and charged as a juvenile.

However, on January 27 of this year, Middlesex County Family Court took the extremely unusual step of referring the matter to Middlesex County criminal court specifically so Marshall could be prosecuted as an adult, due to the severity of the crime.

On July 6, Superior Court Judge Michael Toto sentenced Marshall to 12 years in state prison. He will have to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law upon release.
