South Amboy Teen Hit Woman, Killing Her, And Fled Scene, Police Allege

Police say this 19-year-old South Amboy teen hit a woman as she walked along the shoulder of Rt. 35 in Brick Saturday, and then fled:

BRICK, NJ — A South Amboy man is accused of hitting a woman, killing her, and then fleeing the accident over the weekend on Rt. 35 in Brick, said Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Brick Township Police Chief David Forrester.

The young man is Mark D. Carey Jr., 19. He was arrested Sunday at his home in South Amboy.

The fatal car accident occurred at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 13, on Rt. 35 south near Bay Boulevard in Brick Township. The woman was hit as she was walking along the shoulder of the highway. Authorities have not yet released the woman's name.

Brick Police were called to Rt. 35 at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday for the report of the crash, and found the woman had been hit while she was on the shoulder of the road. It is not known who called 911.

She was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, where she was pronounced dead.

The vehicle had fled the scene, police said. The investigation determined it was a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey.

Carey, Jr. was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another. He was also charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury or death, failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel, authorities said.

As of Tuesday, he is being held at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River pending a detention hearing.
