Chester First Aid Squad In Need Of Donations After Reorganization

After Atlantic Health was designated as the township's primary EMS service, the CFAS lost around $40K in funding, representatives say.

CHESTER, NJ — The Chester First Aid Squad is ramping up fundraising efforts after losing roughly $40,000 in annual municipal funding following Chester Township's decision to designate Atlantic Health as the township's primary emergency medical responder.

The volunteer organization, which has served Chester residents for more than 81 years, announced Monday that while it remains fully operational and well-staffed, the funding change has created "significant financial challenges" that require expanded community support.

According to the squad, Chester Township recently shifted its emergency medical services structure, naming Atlantic Health Corporation as the primary responder for township residents and reducing CFAS to a secondary or backup role. As part of that transition, funding previously allocated to the first aid squad was redirected to Atlantic Health.

"We are deeply grateful that Chester Borough Mayor and Council continue to support CFAS at prior funding levels," the organization said in a statement. "Their continued partnership and commitment to volunteer emergency services are sincerely appreciated."

The squad emphasized that despite responding to fewer calls in the township, many of its costs remain unchanged.

"Ambulance maintenance, medical supplies, insurance, equipment, training, certifications, capital purchases and operational expenses remain essential regardless of call volume or responder designation," the organization said.

Since 2017, Atlantic Health has provided primary weekday daytime EMS coverage in Chester Township from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. CFAS said it has continued monitoring emergency calls throughout Chester around the clock and still responds when volunteers are available, assists alongside Atlantic crews when needed and provides coverage when Atlantic units are unavailable.

The squad also remains the primary EMS responder for Chester Borough during nights and weekends.

CFAS leaders stressed that the financial challenges are not tied to a shortage of volunteers or declining membership.

"These challenges are not the result of declining volunteerism or lack of community commitment," the organization said. "Our members continue to answer calls, train, and serve with the same dedication that has defined this organization for more than 80 years."

To help offset the loss of funding, CFAS plans to expand fundraising efforts in the coming months.

Residents may begin seeing donation boxes at local businesses, including Ace Hardware, Gabe's Deli, Chester Diner, Sub Pub, New York Pizza, Linda's Biscotti, South Side Coffee Co., Roman Pizza, Chester Fine Wines & Spirits, and Aztec Mexican Restaurant. The squad also plans to pursue retail round-up campaigns, additional fundraising events, and expanded sponsorship opportunities.

Several local businesses have already stepped up to support the organization. Earlier this year, PH Steakhouse and Frank Anthony Salon partnered on the annual Bunny Hop Easter event, with proceeds benefiting CFAS. Frank Anthony Salon is also organizing a Classic Car Show in July to support the squad.

The organization thanked residents, businesses, and community groups that have supported its operations through donations, fund drives, coin tosses, and local events.

"CFAS is proud to serve Chester, and with the community's support, we hope to continue our 81-year tradition of volunteer emergency medical services for generations to come," the organization said.
