Fire, Smoke May Be Noticed In Chester This Week, Here's Why

Local operations by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service may ignite concern. Here's why you shouldn't worry:

CHESTER, NJ — Residents may smell smoke this week as a prescribed burning operation is conducted in Chester.

On Friday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service will conduct a controlled burning at the Chester Borough Office property, located at 50 North Road.

The process is essentially a controlled burning of vegetation, typically used to prevent uncontrolled and unpredictable forest/vegetation fire. It can also provide environmental benefits to local wildlife and their habitats.

Agencies will be on site throughout the day conducting operations and monitoring conditions, officials said.

The burning schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions, town representatives added.

Chester residents, as well as people in neighboring towns, may notice the smoke on Friday. Authorities ask that if a resident has any doubt with regard to the origin of fire or smoke, they should call 9-1-1.
