Magnificent Mendham: 'Newsweek' Ranks High School No. 81 Nationally

Newsweek's annual report shows Mendham High School jumps more than 200 slots from previous year.

The 2014-15 school year hasn’t even begun, but it’s already a success for Mendham High School.

Coming on the heels of being ranked the No. 4 public school in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine, Mendham is back in the spotlight, this time on the national level.

Newsweek has announced its rankings of more than 700 public, private, charter and magnet schools across the country, and Mendham High School comes in at number 81. The ranking is a gigantic jump from last year’s list, when Mendham was ranked number 284.

Newsweek used six indicators for its ranking methodology, its Daily Beast website said, including graduation and college acceptance rates; college-level courses and exams; percentage of students with free or reduced lunch; and SAT and ACT scores.

According to the ranking, Mendham had a 99-percent graduation rate; 96.7-percent college-bound rate; and a 0.6-percent free and reduced lunch rate.

The average SAT and ACT scores for Mendham students were 1730 and 25.9, respectively, the rankings showed. Other metrics showed the percentage of students in the school enrolled in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.

The first day of school at Mendham is Thursday, Sept. 4.
