Mendham, Chester Students Test Much Higher Than National Average

One town had some of the best test scores nationally.

MENDHAM, NJ— An analysis of national reading and math testing data has good news for parents in the Mendhams and Chester Township: students are well above average nationally.

The Stanford Education Data Archive took a look at national reading and math test scores to determine how grade level averages and median incomes in a town might correlate.

Overall, the data found that areas with a higher median family income tended to be higher above grade level than areas with lower incomes. (The New York Times took this data and created graphs you can explore.)

The median family income nationwide was $55,775 in 2016. Mendham Township and Borough and Chester Township all have median family incomes between triple or quadruple that-- and that's reflected in above average test scores.

In Mendham Township, the median family income is $206,000. Students from that town test 3.4 grades above the national average, and, according to the New York Times, are one of the most advanced towns in the nation. (based on NYT data, one of the most advanced towns in the nation, just 3 above

Families in Mendham Borough earn a median income of $176,000. Their students test 3 grade levels above average.

Chester Township families earn a median income of $166,000, and see test scores of 2.3 grade levels above average.
