Mendham Superintendent To Discuss Social & Emotional Learning At National Conference
Salvatore Constantino will lead a July workshop on helping children build emotional safety and resilience.

MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ — Mendham Township School District Superintendent Salvatore Constantino, Ed.D., has been selected to present at a national conference hosted by the Fred Rogers Institute in July. The district announced that Constantino will lead a 60-minute interactive workshop at The Work of Fred Rogers: A Cross-Context Conference on Fred’s Legacy in Action Today.
According to the district, Constantino’s session is titled “Look for the Helpers: Supporting Children’s Emotional Safety in a Complex World.” The workshop will focus on practical, research-based strategies for educators and caregivers to help foster children’s emotional safety and resilience.
Constantino has partnered with the Fred Rogers Institute for several years, according to the district. The presentation is centered on the idea that academic success and social-emotional development are closely connected, and it will highlight the value of creating learning environments where students feel safe, understood, and supported.

“Social and emotional learning (SEL) plays a vital role in helping students develop empathy, self-awareness and confidence,” said Constantino. “When schools intentionally nurture these skills, students are better prepared not only for academic success, but also to become thoughtful, resilient, and compassionate members of their communities.”
SEL, according to the NJ Department of Education, is "the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions."

Studies show students in SEL programs are more likely to attend school and receive better grades, and are less likely to have conduct problems.
The district said the session will also examine how adults can help children process emotions, build resilience, and develop healthy relationships at a time when children are increasingly exposed to complex issues through technology and media. Drawing on the principles of Fred Rogers’ work, the workshop will focus on intentional language, emotional validation, and a calm, reassuring presence when guiding children through difficult experiences.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important national conversation and proud to represent the work happening in Mendham Township School District to support the social, emotional, and developmental needs of every child,” added Constantino.
The conference brings together educators, counselors, researchers, and child development professionals from around the country, according to the district. Its focus is on how Fred Rogers’ philosophy continues to influence current approaches to supporting children, families, and communities.
