2 Rescued from Boat off Atlantic Highlands

Atlantic Highlands, NJ - Two men needed to be rescued Monday night after the small cabin cruiser they were in became trapped in the rocks near the Atlantic Highlands Seastreak ferry pier.

Strong wind and waves had pinned the boat to the rocks along the shoreline at about 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The men were heading from Long Island to Key West, NBC New York reports, and they tried to anchor in Raritan Bay, just off Atlantic Highlands, to ride out Monday night's high wind. But their anchor line got caught on the propeller, and the boat was pushed onto the rocks, where it wound up with a hole piercing its hull.

The Atlantic Highlands Fire Department lowered a ladder over the bow of the boat, and the two men climbed in. Both were uninjured. However, they could have easily suffered a broken back, leg or ankle as the boat was tossed onto the rocks, rescuers told NBC New York.

The 38-foot boat, named the JO-LYN IV, is registered in New York, NY, to Karl Conley, reports the Atlantic Highlands Herald.
