ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — The beloved (and haunted) Strauss Mansion in Atlantic Highlands suffered "devastating" flood damage over the winter, and that's why it's been closed for the past eight months.

The Strauss Mansion will not re-open again to the public until 2027.

A pipe burst this winter, the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society said Wednesday on Facebook.

"During the extremely cold week in February, the mansion lost power and, as a result, had no heat. This caused a pipe in the second floor bathroom to burst, leading to significant flooding on the second floor, as well as the downstairs kitchen, bathroom and basement," they said. "Fortunately, it was determined that the flooding occurred within in a single day, as someone was there the day before and the day after the incident."

"We settled the claim with our insurance carrier and are now in the process of restoration of the damaged areas of the mansion, so that we can be ready to open up next year. While the insurance will cover the cost of repairs, it does not address the loss of income from the events during 2026 that take place at the mansion."

If you are able, please consider making a donation at www.ahhistory.org/donate.

"We look forward to welcoming you back in 2027," said the group.

The Strauss Mansion is a classic Victorian-era property located in Atlantic Highlands, a historical town known for having dozens of extremely well-preserved turn-of-the-century homes. Perched on a hill, the Strauss Mansion has stunning views of Sandy Hook Bay. The 21-room home was built as a "summer cottage" for a wealthy New York City businessman and his wife; it was built in 1893, the height of the Gilded Age. It is said to be haunted.
