Atlantic Highlands, Shrewsbury, UB Schools Get Silent Alarms

The alarm funding is named for Alyssa Alhadeff, who lived in New Jersey before she was killed at age 14 in the Parkland school shooting.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — This week, it was announced that school districts in Atlantic Highlands, Union Beach and Shrewsbury were approved in the latest round of taxpayer funding to receive silent panic alarms.

The silent panic alarms, as well as other school security upgrades, will alert law enforcement during an emergency as required by Alyssa’s Law.

The Middletown school district already received the funding: In July of 2021, Middletown schools were approved to receive $538,389 to install silent panic alarms. Patch is checking to see if the silent alarms have been installed yet.

These alarms can directly and silently notify the police if there is a danger or emergency situation happening in the classroom.

The law is named for Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old girl who lived with her family in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey before they moved to Parkland, Florida.

On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14 2018, Alyssa was one of the 17 people killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. She was killed at the age of 14. Her family worked with North Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat, to pass legislation that will now require all New Jersey schools have the silent alarms.

Many nearby school districts were in the first round of funding for the silent alarms, including Hazlet, Monmouth Beach, Keyport, Little Silver, Sayreville and Woodbridge.

The latest round of funding for panic alarms announced Jan. 13:
