The Middletown Arts Center (MAC), in collaboration with Dunbar Repertory Company, proudly presents Ntozake Shange’s groundbreaking theatrical work, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, November 7–15, 2026.
Directed by Darrell Lawrence Willis, Sr., this powerful and deeply moving production brings to life Shange’s celebrated “choreopoem,” a compelling fusion of poetry, music, movement and storytelling. Through the voices of seven Black women, the work explores themes of identity, love, resilience, oppression and sisterhood, offering an unforgettable celebration of the strength and complexity of the human spirit.
First produced in 1975 and brought to Broadway in 1976, for colored girls… remains a landmark of American theater, recognized for its innovative form and profound cultural impact.
Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf is a groundbreaking theatrical work that blends poetry, dance, music and dramatic storytelling into a form Shange called a “choreopoem.”
The work follows seven women, identified by the colors of the rainbow—Lady in Red, Lady in Blue, Lady in Purple, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Brown, Lady in Green and Lady in Orange—as they share deeply personal stories of love, loss, struggle, survival and self-discovery.
Through 20 interconnected poems, the women reveal their individual experiences while finding strength in their shared humanity. Moving between moments of joy, humor, heartbreak and empowerment, the production explores the challenges Black women face while celebrating their resilience, individuality and solidarity.
Since its Broadway debut in 1976, for colored girls… has become an enduring theatrical classic, inspiring generations of artists and audiences with its revolutionary approach to storytelling.
Dunbar Repertory Company’s production features Juli Harkins (Lady In Red), Takia Clayton (Lady In Brown), Amya Ashe (Lady In Brown), Tania Davis-Fields (Lady In Blue), Dana P. Hawkins (Lady In Purple/ Choreographer), Vivette Alston (Lady In Yellow), Octavia Harrell (Lady In Green) and Camitha Shivers-Whipple (Lady In Orange).
Ntozake Shange (1948–2018) was an acclaimed American playwright, poet, novelist and essayist whose groundbreaking work transformed contemporary American theater and literature.
Throughout her prolific career, Shange authored numerous plays, poetry collections, novels, children's books and essays. Her most celebrated work, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf , introduced audiences to her innovative “choreopoem,” combining poetry, music, dance and dramatic performance.
The work received an Obie Award during its Off-Broadway run at the Public Theater before moving to Broadway in 1976. It has since been performed internationally and was adapted into a 2010 feature film directed by Tyler Perry.
Shange's writing continues to resonate through its fearless exploration of identity, race, gender, love and the experiences of Black women.
Known to residents of Central New Jersey as “Monmouth County’s African American Theater Company”, Dunbar Repertory Company is committed to its mission of perpetuating an appreciation of cultural diversity and celebrating African American culture through LIVE literary readings, main stage theatrical productions, education programs and services.
