How To Detect And Avoid Senior Citizen Scams Lecture At BCC

LINCROFT, NJ — Assemblywoman Amy Handlin (R-13) and Senator Vin Gopal (D-11) will be moderating a roundtable discussion with AARP New Jersey, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, the Monmouth County Division of Consumer Affairs and Asbury Park Press reporter David Willis (of the "Press On Your Side" column) at Brookdale Community College to discuss the impact fraud and scams have on the community.

Why: Did you know? Fraud costs senior citizens $2.9 billion annually according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. These scammers not only take the hard-earned money of their victims, but their security and self-worth. This issue has personally affected every single person whether it be their parents, grandparents or themselves.

This type of crime is preventable through education. Why do scammers target seniors? According to the FBI, “Older Americans are less likely to report a fraud because they don’t know who to report it to, are too ashamed at having been scammed, or don’t know they have been scammed. Elderly victims may not report crimes, for example, because they are concerned that relatives may think the victims no longer have the mental capacity to take care of their own financial affairs.”

It is imperative that we give seniors the tools to recognize, report and defend themselves against scammers.
