Keansburg Police Officer Admits To Attempted Aggravated Sex Assault

KEANSBURG, NJ — A Keansburg police officer who was charged last year with sexually assaulting a woman while she was unconscious has now admitted to a sex crime.

Nicholas Thompson, 25, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree attempted aggravated sex assault, said Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey.

He will be sentenced to four years in prison (he must serve at least 85 percent of that term), will lose his job on the Keansburg police force and must register as a sex offender.

Up until Tuesday's guilty plea, Thompson had been suspended without pay from the police force pending the outcome of the case, according to Keansburg Police Chief Wayne Davis.

According to the county prosecutor, the crime took place inside a private home in January 2021, when the victim, an adult female, was unconscious and incapable of consent.

Thompson had just been sworn in as a Keansburg police patrolman that same year he was arrested, 2021. Prior to that, was a SLEO (Special Law Enforcement Officer) Type II for the town of Keansburg.

He was arrested last October.

Thompson’s plea agreement was reached after consultation with the victim.

He will never be allowed to hold a taxpayer-funded job in New Jersey; must register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and be on parole supervision for life, said the county prosecutor.

“Police officers are expected to be held to a higher standard of conduct, on-duty and off– and should never bring harm to others,” Acting Prosecutor Linskey said. “We feel that this plea agreement provides justice to our victim and renders the appropriate outcome."
