Keyport To Vote On Native American School Mascot

KEYPORT, NJ-- A vote will be held at tonight's Keyport Board of Education meeting to decide the future of the Red Raider.

Although the school doesn't have an official mascot, Native American imagery, including arrowheads and a chief in a ceremonial headdress, have been long features at the school and on uniforms.

"Motion to retain the current mascot" is the first and only item of old business on the agenda for tonight's school board meeting.

An alum of the school first brought up the issue in 2015, calling on the school to change the mascot to something not involving Native Americans. Many alumni and current students have been vocal about their support for the mascot.

The meeting will be held at the Keyport High School, beginning at 7:30.
