The U.S. Coast Guard is proposing to allow the shipping of shale gas extraction wastewater by barge on the Nation’s rivers.

A proposed “policy letter” would allow this highly toxic and radioactive waste to be carried by unmanned barge in bulk on navigable waterways throughout the U.S.  This includes all inland rivers - including the Delaware - and the Intracoastal Waterway.  How could anyone think this can be safe?  What about our drinking water, air pollution from radon and the off-gassing of frack waste chemicals?  What about fish, wildlife and the natural environment that cannot escape spills and degradation from this traffic?  What about the potential for an accident involving the 420,000 gallons of this toxic wastewater that a barge can carry?  What about the cumulative impacts from cradle to grave of this waste?

Believe or not, the Coast Guard is not even conducting a comprehensive environmental analysis of the potential impacts of allowing this hazardous liquid to float on our rivers, they are cutting corners with federal environmental law, and they are setting up a loophole that will allow for changes to the methods used to meet safety standards to be made behind closed doors, hidden from public scrutiny.  You can find out more and take action to stop this at the link below.

Please take a moment to send a letter now – the record closes at 5:00 pm tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 6: http://www.delawareriverkeeper.org/act-now/urgent-details.aspx?Id=154

Thank you!
