MIDDLETOWN, NJ — This year will be the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and everyone in Monmouth County is invited to "light up the shoreline," by gathering at the water's edge at 8:46 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 with either a candle, their cell phone or another light source.

This massive, county-wide event is being planned by Monmouth County, but individual towns are telling residents where to meet at that date and time.

Middletown is recommending that community members go to the Belford Ferry Terminal to help “Light Up the Shoreline” on 9/11. There is lots of parking available and Lower Manhattan is visible.

The plan is to have thousands of people along the waterfront hold their cell phone up or a candle at exactly 8:46 p.m., 12 hours after the first plane flew into the North Tower twenty years ago on that date.

The event is being held in conjunction with 53 municipalities in Monmouth County. Residents who plan to attend can check with their local officials about specific plans in town.
