Middletown Announced WWI Memorial Restoration
The life-sized doughboy statue will undergo repairs, thanks in part to the local American Legion.
MIDDLETOWN, NJ— Beginning in 2017, Middletown will begin restoration of a 1930s World War I memorial, with help from the American Legion Post 338.
“Our doughboy statue is symbolic of the township’s enduring respect for our courageous World War I veterans. We’re grateful to American Legion Post 338 for partnering with us to restore this significant monument,” said Mayor Scharfenberger.
Commander Ron Stark and legion member Tom Garretson attended the the October Township Committee meeting to donate $1,000 to restoration efforts on behalf of the The American Legion Post 338.

Repairs will be made to a life-sized doughboy statue, which stands in attention in full uniform holding a rifle. It sets on a granite base with a with a bronze plaque, and honors the several dozen WWI veterans from Belford, Port Monmouth and New Monmouth.
