Middletown BOE Holds Special Meeting Thursday Night On Mold Issue

The Middletown BOE will hold a special meeting Thursday to brief the public on the mold, which delayed the first day of school to Sept. 13.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The Middletown Board of Education will hold a special meeting this Thursday night to brief the public on the mold issue in two schools in the district.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and it will actually be held virtually on Zoom, which is not usually how the Board conducts their meetings now (usually, meetings are in person only).

The discovery of mold in classrooms at Nut Swamp and Lincroft elementary schools pushed back the start of the school year for every school in the district, now back to Sept. 13, Middletown superintendent Mary Ellen Walker said in a surprise announcement Tuesday.

The Middletown school district has hired an environmental consultant who will be testing each room in all elementary, middle and high schools. During that time, all buildings will be closed. The district also hired a second vendor, a remediation team to remove the mold.

It remains unknown how much the district is paying to remove the mold.
