MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Middletown police had to rescue a driver who was trapped on the roof of his car Tuesday morning after the car became stuck in tidal flood waters in the Port Monmouth section. That's a photo of the submerged car provided by a Patch reader (thank you!!).

At approximately 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, Middletown Twp. police were called to the area of Broadway and Main Street in the Port Monmouth section for a report of a vehicle that had become submerged in tidal flood waters. Cpl. Robert McNair, Cpl. Ryan Riffert and Ptl. Thomas Hughes arrived on scene and found the driver had exited the vehicle and was sitting on the roof of the car.

He had attempted to drive though a patch of high tidal flood water when the car left the roadway and became stuck in a ditch. The driver, who is not being identified, did not sustain any injuries. He waded through the flood water to get to the police and dry land. Middletown police then pulled him from the flooded roadway.

The driver has made arrangements to have the vehicle removed, so if you see it on Broadway today you don't need to call 911. Middletown police said they received multiple calls of a car trapped in water Tuesday morning, but they all pertained to this incident.

Drivers are urged to never attempt to drive through high waters due to the dangers posed to persons and property.
