Man Tries To Flee Monmouth County Courtroom

The Middletown man was accused of simple assault before he ran; he was apprehended and faces more serious charges, an official said.

FREEHOLD, NJ — A Middletown Township man who was facing charges of simple assault and criminal mischief is in a lot more trouble with the law after he tried run from court on Monday, the Monmouth County sheriff's office said Wednesday.

Matthew Greenblatt, 22, of Middletown, was seated and set to appear before Judge Paul Escandon about 11:30 a.m. on Monday when he decided he was going to try to escape from the courtoom, which is on the second floor of the Monmouth County courthouse, Monmouth County Undersheriff Ted Freeman said Wednesday.

Greenblatt was apprehended by sheriff’s officers and was taken back to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freeman said. Two sheriff’s officers received minor injuries during the attempted escape, he said, and were checked out at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold Township and released.

Greenblatt was being held at the jail on a warrant from Middletown on contempt of court, according to Monmouth County Corrections online records, along with two charges from Neptune of simple assault and Middletown charges of criminal mischief.

As a result of the incident at the courthouse, Greenblatt is facing additional charges of two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, attempt to disarm a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and escape, Freeman said.
