Middletown Outlines Sex Education Curriculum By Grade Level

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — On Wednesday, the Middletown school district sent all parents "opt-in" forms, requesting their permission for their child to be included in the controversial new sex education curriculum that starts this fall.

The Middletown school district also outlined what will be taught in the new health/phys. ed. curriculum by grade level. Here is what will be taught in Middletown schools this year:

It is not immediately clear if what Middletown is teaching complies with the new sex education mandates from the state. But Middletown schools superintendent Mary Ellen Walker said yesterday the revised curriculum is "aligned with state expectations."

"While the state provides instructional expectations through the standards, districts have latitude to write their own curriculum and select appropriate programming," said Jessica Alfone, Middletown curriculum superintendent, on Thursday.

Here is the 66-page sex education/heath/phys ed. curriculum requirements from the Department of Education, which include that students should be able to define vaginal, oral and anal sex" and discuss pregnancy options, including abortion and adoption by the end of eighth grade.

School districts are required by law to teach the new sex education guidelines, Laura Fredrick, communications director for the NJ Department of Education, told the Bergen Record in late July.
