Middletown School District Developing A Long-Range Facilities Plan
The Middletown school district is still considering what it will do in the future with its aging school buildings.
MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The Middletown school district is trying to make a plan for what it will do in the future, both in terms of capital projects and its school buildings, some of which are old and need repairs.
To that end, the school district, with the entire school board involved, is in the middle of creating a long-range facilities plan.
At the most recent school board meeting, held Tuesday night, school district business administrator Amy Doherty presented the latest on that plan to the public.

This comes after multiple failed attempts in the past two years to close and consolidate Middletown schools.
As of July, the Middletown school district has not proposed any new school closures.

The long-range facilities plan assesses all 16 school buildings in the school district, plus the Lincroft annex and the district's maintenance compound. The district also looks at buildings and facilities that need repair.
It also looks at capital projects the district has done in the past 15 years (such as the track and turf replacement at High School South), and at capital projects the district wants to accomplish in the future.
The plan also factors in the district's tax revenue, surplus funds and outstanding debt.
The plan is not finished. Doherty said Tuesday night the district is currently "collecting data to inform planning and decision-making" in the future.
Also, Board member Erin Torres said Tuesday night the long-range plan is currently missing demographic data, student enrollment trends and other data. She asked the district to gather that data, which Doherty said she would.
The Middletown school board will talk more about the long-range facilities plan at its next school board meeting in August. At that meeting, the district's architect, bond counselor and financial advisor will speak before the Board and the public about how to develop a long-range capital plan.
