Middletown Township Public Library Awards Scholarship

Conover-Wihtol Scholarship awarded to Nicole Perez

On September 21, 2016, the Board of Trustees of the Middletown Township Public Library awarded the annual Conover-Wihtol Scholarship to Nicole Perez of Matawan. Ms. Perez is currently studying at Clarion University to earn a Master’s Degree in Information and Library Science, with a career focus on Teen Services in public libraries.

The Conover-Wihtol Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a student interested in a career in the rewarding and challenging profession of librarianship. The Scholarship was created in 1972 to honor and remember Edith B. Conover and Karl F. Wihtol, both long-time residents of Middletown Township and dedicated friends of the Library. Since its inception, the Fund has awarded 64 scholarships to qualified individuals, many of whom have become quite active in the information field. The Conover-Wihtol Scholarships are offered for a minimum of $2,500 to applicants possessing a bachelor’s degree or who are in the final semester of undergraduate studies. The applicant will be expected to provide evidence of acceptance for graduate work in the study of Library Science at a school accredited by the American Library Association.

The Scholarship Committee consisted of Library Board Vice-President Tara Berson and Library Board Member Larry Nelson. Both agreed very quickly that Ms. Perez was the most deserving candidate for the scholarship because of her glowing recommendations from professionals in the field.
