Obituary: Alice Burt Weston Rounds, 103, Founder of Oak Hill Garden Club

The great-grandmother was a long time member of Old First Church in Middletown.

 

Alice Burt Weston Rounds, 103, died in her home at Navesink Harbor, Red Bank, on Monday, March 18.

Rounds graduated with honors from William Smith College and taught high school English, French and Latin. She also as a school librarian.

After marrying career U.S. Army officer Gifford Weston, the couple had two children: Helen Weston Bross and George L. Weston.

The Westons were married for 43 years until Gifford's death. Alice then married Philip Rounds and welcomed his children from a prior marriage into the family: Sari Rounds Jeske and Robert Rounds. Philip Rounds and Alice spent nine years together before he passed away.

In that time, Alice and Phil were known as a travel enthsiasts and Alice earned a reputation as an avid gardener and became founder of the Oak Hill Garden Club, Middletown and was very active in the gardens at Navesink Harbor.

She was a long time faithful member of Old First Church in Middletown.

Alice was also known to treasure her family.

Her family noted that, despite her age, she remained current in technological trends and used the computer, keeping her mind sharp and in tune with advances.

"She modeled for us how to age with grace, accepting those things which we can not change, being open to new ideas and technology, seeing the beauty of nature, always being grateful for even little kindnesses," said her family in her obituary on legacy.com. "She was always kind in word and deed, saw the goodness in people, cared about the welfare of others and had faith in God. She is survived by 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren."

A memorial service celebrating Alice's life will be held Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Old First Church, 69 Kings Highway, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be given to Old First Church or Heifer Project.
