Old-Timey Baseball Game In Keansburg Oct. 8

Come watch the Monmouth Furnace take on the New York Gothams at noon this Sunday, Oct. 8. They'll be playing by 1864 rules.

KEANSBURG, NJ — Like baseball? Like old-timey baseball? The national pastime will be played by 1864 rules this Sunday, October 8 at St. Johns Field in Keansburg. St. Johns Field is located at 47 St. Johns Place, just off Rt. 36 in Keansburg. This is part of Keansburg's 100th anniversary weekend.

The 12 noon re-enactment of vintage “base ball” (two words back then) will pit the Monmouth Furnace club against the New York Gothams. The players will use wood bats and they'll field the ball without gloves, as was the custom in the mid-19th century. That's the Monmouth Furnace team pictured above.

The quaint but fast-paced game will be accompanied by a hot-dog-eating contest, a parade from the Keansburg municipal building at 3 p.m. and fireworks on the beach at dusk. There will be free admission to all activities for residents and non-residents alike.
