One Dead After Boat Sinks In Raritan Bay Saturday

One person died when their boat overturned and sank Saturday morning in Raritan Bay between Middletown and Sandy Hook.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — One person died when their boat overturned and sank Saturday morning in Raritan Bay between Middletown and Sandy Hook, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

At about 10 a.m.. Saturday, Coast Guard crews based at Sandy Hook received a VHF radio call from a good Samaritan reporting a 21-foot boat had overturned, with one person in the water. The good Samaritan was able to recover the unresponsive person from the water and begin CPR on their boat.

Coast Guard boat crews from Sandy Hook and New York were dispatched to the scene, as were New Jersey State Police. The Coast Guard boats got there in 10 minutes and took the injured person to Monmouth Cove Marina, in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown.

CPR was continued and EMS crews took over, but the person was pronounced dead by Monmouth County EMS. They were not identified.

The Coast Guard and other agencies continued searching the area for other potential people in the water, until it was confirmed that the person recovered was the only occupant of the capsized vessel.

The boat sank in thirty feet of water and has not been recovered.
