Over 4 Miles Of Water Mains Replaced In Middletown's Leonardo Section

Starting Oct. 10, ​NJ American Water will replace more than four miles of aging water mains under these streets in Leonardo:

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Starting the week of Oct. 10, New Jersey American Water will replace more than four miles of aging water mains in the Leonardo section of Middletown.

The company will upgrade the aging cast-iron water lines, which were installed as far back as the 1930s. The work will take place on the following streets: Appleton Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Bay Avenue, Bellevue Avenue, Brevent Avenue, Broadway Avenue, Burlington Avenue, Center Avenue, Concord Avenue, Florence Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Monmouth Avenue, Raritan Avenue, Ridgewood Avenue, Thompson Avenue, Vanderbilt Avenue, Viola Avenue and Washington Avenue.

The old lines will be replaced with new 6- and 8-inch ductile iron main under those streets.

New Jersey American Water contractor, Perna Finnigan, will begin work on or about October 10. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This is a $10-million project and a big job: It will not be completed until the fall of 2023. Middletown residents on those streets will likely see road closures and/or alternating traffic patterns during those work hours.

The project also includes replacing 20 fire hydrants 250 utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route.

Additionally, New Jersey American Water will replace any customer-owned service line that has been identified as lead or galvanized as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized water lines by 2031.
