Public Meeting Wednesday Night on Sandy Hook Parking Fee Increase

Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area - As you should know by now, the National Park Service wants to raise the parking fees at Sandy Hook for summer 2017. If you have thoughts on the parking hike, the federal park service will hold an open meeting on the proposal this Wednesday, Aug. 31. Gateway invites you to share your opinions and ideas at the meeting, which will go from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the following location:

New proposed fees at Sandy Hook:
$20 per day
$100 per season
$50 per oversize car per day
$200 per oversize car per season

Currently, it is $15 per day and $75 per season to park at Sandy Hook. For over-sized vehicles it is $30 per day and $150 per season. Fees are collected between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. If it goes through, this would be Gateway’s first parking fee increase since 2012. Just this past weekend, all the parking was free at Sandy Hook to celebrate the National Park Service's 100-year birthday.

Sandy Hook is home to the oldest lighthouse in the nation and is one of the ten most visited national parks in the country. Park officials say the increased parking revenue will go to rehabilitating and adding a webcam to the lighthouse, improving the campgrounds and expanding the docking facilities.
