Rabid Raccoon Tussles With Dog In Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — A rabid raccoon was found this week in Middletown, where it got into an "altercation" with someone's pet dog, said the Township.

The raccoon was found in the area near Hartshorne and Wigwam roads.

Middletown Township Animal Control responded to a call for a possible altercation between a pet dog and a raccoon there. Middletown Health Director Rich DeBenedetto said they were unsure if the dog killed it, as there were no witnesses.

But Animal Control officers retrieved the carcass of the raccoon and sent it for testing.

Lab results confirmed the raccoon was positive for rabies, Middletown Twp. announced here on Thursday.
