Redevelopment Plan Approved for North Middletown

A property called an "eyesore" has been approved for an ambitious redevelopment plan. A developer is still needed.

Middletown Township committee members approved a redevelopment plan for North Middletown at its Nov. 16 meeting.

The area to be redeveloped is along Port Monmouth Road, between Ocean and Bray avenues.

While not set in stone, the vision for the redevelopment zone is ultimately a three-story mixed-use building with 20 townhouse and apartments. It also includes plans for sidewalks and a pedestrian-friendly commercial zone. Right now an autobody shop sits on the lot.

“This has been an eyesore for as long as I have been on the committee, and there were so many issues with this particular piece of property from sketchy ownership, contamination … and all these are really a faulthouse of problems that make it difficult to redevelop this area,” Committeeman Gerard Scharfenberger told the Independent.

However, a developer is still sought for the project, and it would require Planning Board approval.
