River Plaza Elementary School's National Walk to School Day

River Plaza Elementary School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016.

Parents, students and members of the community and Middletown Board of Education will be meeting at the River Plaza Firehouse on Applegate Street at 8 a.m. Freeholder Serena DiMaso will be reading the Official International Walk to School Day Proclamation and then all will proceed with the walk to River Plaza Elementary School.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling. This has been of particular concern for parents whose children walk along Hubbard Avenue (County Road 10) on their way to elementary school. After completing a walking assessment in May of 2016, the Safe Routes to School program concluded that work must, "...be done as soon as possible" to make the route safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Walk to School Day events also emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the River Plaza Parent Faculty Association.
