Rockit n' Roll with Middletown's Bruce Gallipani on Audition Day

A picture essay of a day that either makes it or breaks it for future rock stars

Recently, Rockit, an instructional program designed to give young musicians a rock n' roll experience, held auditions at the program's heaquarters, Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre, for the next session of classes ... or "rehearsals" actually.

Middletown resident, Rockit founder and impresario, Bruce Gallipani created the program that pulls together a special blend of eager and talented kids to form bands and mentors them through the process of playing, practicing and eventually performing just like any rock band.

The program is not, however, just like any rock school. The Rockit performances are every bit as entertaining and well-played as many headline rock shows. Go to see Rockit live and you'll realize that the group does not even come close to any kind of typical "kiddie" performance. This is not a recital. This is rock.

The zealousness of those who have passed through the program and the anxiousness of those hoping to make the cut is palpable. Indeed, even those who are past the cut-off age of 17 come by to pay homage to Gallipani and Rockit and some spent the entire day working for both. This legion of Rockit faithful, described by Gallipani as "family," returns session after session. Even the most rock steady Rockit under 17  alum re-auditions just like the newbies and reenlists till the bitter-end.

Gallipani said this was the organization's "best turnout" ever for auditions, which ran from 10 a.m. 'til after 8 p.m. The program runs for the next seven weeks culminating with a live show, performing Rockit's Classic Album Series, Who's Next, a tribute and exploration of the 1971 WHO album, on June 26 at The Count Basie Theatre.
