Second Story Art Gallery Presents Artist Manda Gorsegner’s "Oyster Aesthetics" – Artist’s Reception November 5

Second Story Art Gallery presents Manda Gorsegner’s "Oyster Aesthetics", with an artist’s reception for this exhibition Saturday, November 5 from 5:00 – 7:00pm at 78 First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands. Exhibition is free and runs through December 3.

About the Artist

Manda Gorsegner's practice is an intersection of art and environmental activism. Working with beach debris, left over hardware store paint, inks made from discarded coffee grinds and the detritus of everyday life, Gorsegner searches for meaning in the materials of a throw away society and the cycles of decay and renewal. In this new exhibition, Gorsegner made her own "oyster concrete" from shells collected from local restaurants and then created forms from objects she found scouring the beach. She says "Oysters are lovely...they play a valuable role in the ecosystem, are an important resource for Bayside communities, and they are incredibly beautiful. The oyster should not be overlooked." These compelling objects are made with a laborious craft using recycled and recombined materials much like an oyster that turns a simple, ubiquitous grain of sand into a pearl.

Second Story Art Gallery exhibits artwork that is highly crafted, but also goes beyond the material and speaks to and comments on its experiences in the world. Committed to the local community, Second Story Art Gallery works with other galleries and arts organizations to promote arts and culture in Monmouth County.

Hours of the Second Story Art Gallery are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 12 to 4pm.
