Stretch of Henry Hudson Trail Closed for Construction

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Beginning Monday, January 9, a 1¼ mile section of the Henry Hudson trail in Atlantic Highlands will be closed, between Atlantic Highlands Marina and the Henry Hudson Spring. Ongoing repairs are needed after this portion of the trail was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Sandy's 14-foot-high storm surge destroyed all boardwalk crossings, removed much of the trail surfacing and eroded the toe of the bluff. The Atlantic Highlands section of the Henry Hudson Trail is being completely reconstructed from Popamora Point at the Highlands/Atlantic Highlands border to the Atlantic Highlands Marina. The project is a joint effort between the Monmouth County Park System and the borough of Atlantic Highlands. FEMA will reimburse Monmouth County and the municipality for 80% of their expenditures. Work will be completed by the fall of 2017.

The Henry Hudson Trail is a 24-mile long former railroad right-of-way that has been converted to a running, biking and walking paved path.

The project includes:

• Installation of sub-surface drains to convey water across the trail
• New surfacing, both quarry dust and bituminous pavement
• New precast concrete boardwalks at various trail sections
• Additional storm water protection along the bayside of the trail.
