Waiting for Spring!

Spring hasn't quite sprung at my house, but I am so ready for green grass, daffodils, and especially for the trees to sprout their tender, new leaves.  It's been a long, cold winter and I think we're all ready to be done with snow.

Here are three fantastic picture books to read aloud to your child, that celebrate the natural world in all of it's hues.

Julie Fogliano and Erin E. Stead's sweet and simple book AND THEN IT'S SPRING follows a young boy and his dog as they set out to plant a garden. They wait eagerly for the green shoots, they play, they wait, and wait...for the brown to turn to green.

999 FROGS WAKE UP is an import from Japan, with funky, bold illustrations that show 999 frogs waking up from a long winter's nap. In turn, they wake up a tortoise, a lizard, and the ladybugs...but they get a big surprise when they hop down a hole and wake up a big snake. Don't worry, it's comical, not scary, and the spare text combines with bright illustrations that really pop.

They call Laura Vaccaro Seeger "the queen of the concept books" and GREEN is a great illustration of how she earned that accolade. GREEN is more of a meditation on the color than the season of spring, but one feeds into another easily. Her pictures of a spring forest bursting with green or the tangy green of a lime illustrate just how many unique and wonderful shades of green there are in the world.
