In Middletown, teachers are singing “Dear Summer Reader” in an attempt to to combat the “summer slide.”

Experts say that children who read over the summer gain skills, but those who don’t read, lose skills, according to the Reading is Fundamental website.

That website quotes a National Summer Learning Association report that said:

“A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year.... It’s common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills.”

So, the teachers at Ocean Avenue School have a message for their students:

“You’ve got to know how to read and read like crazy.

Even when you’re feeling lazy,

each and every summer night.”
