With Region Title in Hand, Middletown South's Herring Unable To Work Through Consolation Brackets

Tough field knocks junior out of contention for state title

In a state like New Jersey where the wrestling talent is arguably as any other state in the union, even those wrestlers who make the trip to Atlantic City are not assured of staying in the medal round to the end.

So is the case for Middletown South junior Nick Herring. The Eagle wrestler had lost just once this season and entered the tournament as the Region 6 Champion. On Friday night in a battle with Region 8 Champion CJ Cobb of Williamstown, Herring came up just short of staying in the top half of the bracket.

The final score had Cobb winning by the narrowest of 3-2 margins, but unlike those who lost in the preliminary round, losers in the pre-quarterfinals lived to fight another day. For Herring, that meant a match on Saturday morning against Clarke Moynihan of Kittatinny.

Moynihan finished second in Region 2 and had already pinned Brian Merkel of St. Peters Prep before losing 3-1 to Chris Cancelliere of North Hunterdon.

When the two met on Saturday morning, it was Moynihan keeping his season alive with a 7-5 decision.

Herring not only won the Region 6 title in his weight class, but also the District 22 crown as he finished his year with an impressive 33-3 record. With all this experience under his belt, Herring's senior season should be something to see when the Eagles kick off their year next winter.
