At 1st-Ever Competition, Girls of Troop 19 Finish 3rd Overall
The girls of Scouts BSA Troop 19 - Short Hills, impressively win two trophies at their 1st-ever scouting skills competition.
The annual Scouts BSA Lenape Trail District Klondike Derby was held in South Mountain Reservation to determine who was the "best-of-the-best" in an array of scouting skills, including leadership, teamwork, and Scout spirit.
Nearly four hundred Scouts organized into thirty-nine patrols participated, and Scouts had six hours to complete the twelve-town skills course. Each town presented a new skill challenge, and the Scouts' performance was judged on a variety of factors.
Two female patrols from Troop 19, chartered at St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, took part and each secured a trophy in their first-ever competition—the Stallion Patrol led by Patrol Leader Keira Lowden won 3rd Place Overall for excellence in all twelve towns, and the Jellyfish Patrol led by Patrol Leader Morgan Lomax was awarded Best-of-Town for excellence in first aid skills.

"Our first Klondike Derby was an incredible experience. Our patrol practiced hard leading up to the event and our efforts showed. As female Scouts, we are so excited to be part of the future of Scouts BSA.", said Stallion Patrol Leader Keira Lowden.
"I am very proud of the girls, as our Scouts have much less scouting experience (less than 12 months) compared to other seasoned Scout troops. Since 90% of the patrols were composed of boys, securing the 3rd place overall is an impressive feat and testament to our Scouts' focus, dedication and leadership, and the overall Troop 19 scouting program for girls at St. Rose of Lima," said Scoutmaster Daniel Cannon.
