2 Firefighters Injured, 6 Residents Displaced In Millburn Fire

MILLBURN, NJ — Six residents were displaced and three first responders received minor injuries due to a fire at a 40-unit apartment complex in Millburn Monday, the town said.

The three-alarm blaze was reported at 206 Millburn Ave., known as Wyoming Villas.

According to the town, the Millburn Fire Department received reports of black smoke pouring out of a window at 8:56 p.m. at the complex. Upon arrival, fire officials located the fire in the rear cockloft of the building.

With assistance from Millburn Police, the entire apartment complex was evacuated and no resident injuries were reported.

Two firefighters and a police officer were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

"Initial firefighters on scene stretched multiple hand lines into the structure to locate, confine and extinguish the fire. They also utilized vertical ventilation techniques on the roof to remove smoke and pressure within the structure," said the town.

Millburn Fire Chief Robert Echavarria said, “The fire appears to be accidental in nature,” said Millburn Fire Chief Robert Echavarria. “Preliminary reports indicate an electrical fire in the attic.”

Residents Displaced

Some residents were able to return to their homes Tuesday, others are awaiting minor repairs, and some may have to wait longer, the town said.

"Building #s 4 and 9 sustained heavy damage and residents should anticipate long-term displacement," the town said in a message.

The Red Cross has set up a reception center at the Bauer Community Center located in Taylor Park at 100 Main St. for residents of 206 Millburn Ave. who were displaced.

Nearby fire departments from South Essex, West Orange, Summit, Springfield, Union, Caldwell, Livingston, and Orange responded to the incident.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
