Big Wins in Millburn Boys Basketball
Local teams took home trophies in recent basketball championship games.
This past week, Millburn boys basketball took centerstage. After a week of quarter- and semi-final match-ups, several of the Millburn Recreation teams played championship games. Teams vied for wins in 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th-8th grade playoffs. Here’s how it all played out.
4th Grade Boys Championship
Colonels – 31 Pacers – 27
On Tuesday night, March 8th, the Colonels defeated the Pacers 31-27. The Colonels were led by Zane Solender’s 14 points. The Colonels held off the previously undefeated Pacers despite being outscored 11-4 in the fourth quarter. The Colonels held the Pacers’ Nick Maldonado to 18 points. Evan Jacob finished with 9 points. He also scored all of the Colonels points in the fourth quarter.

5th Grade Boys Championship
Heat – 28 Bucks – 22
The Heat took home the 5th grade boys’ championship this past Tuesday with a 28-22 victory over the top-ranked Bucks. Ross Gang scored a game-high 21 points, including all of the Heat points in the fourth quarter. Sam Herbst added five points for the Heat. The Bucks were led by Bryan Levy’s 14 points.
6th Grade Boys Championship
Trailblazers – 21 Supersonics – 19
On Wednesday evening, the second-seeded Trailblazers grabbed the 6th grade boys championship with a 21-19 victory over the 5th ranked Supersonics. In a great defensive effort from both teams, the Trailblazers led 10-4 at halftime, keeping the Supersonics scoreless in the entire second quarter. During the game at Millburn Middle School, the Sonics made a great comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Blazers 10-3. They were led by Kyle Mangold’s seven fourth-quarter points (11 total for a game high). Mangold had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, barely missing a jump shot as time expired. Mangold was 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Ben Goodman led the champion Trailblazers with 10 points including six in the third quarter. Sam Bernard scored five points and Noah Ades scored four for the Blazers.

7th-8th Grade Boys Championship
Longhorns – 40 Huskies – 33
The third-ranked Longhorns held off the 13th-ranked Huskies in their Cinderella run for a championship with their 40-33 victory Wednesday night. The Longhorns had five players with five or more points. The team was led by Scott Barabander’s 12 points. Jordan Bennett scored seven of his nine points for the Longhorns in the first quarter. The Huskies were led by Billy Berns, who had a game high of 16 points. Noah Lombos scored 11 points for the Huskies.
