Last week Millburn High School, in coordination with the Millburn Short Hills Athletic Club, created a one day volunteer Krav Maga self-defense workshop for graduating female seniors. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), 44 percent of victims of sexual assault are under age 18, 80 percent are under age 30. The statistics are that 1 in 4 freshman girls will be sexually assaulted on a college campus , and every two minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Approximately 2/3 of assaults are committed by someone the victim knows and 38 percent of rapists are a friend or acquaintance.
The girls at MHS learned real world tactics of street survival:
First, be aware of your surroundings. Survey where you are to determine who or what may be used to your advantage, including the nearest escape route. Secondly, you will be surprised, so "expect the unexpected" to your advantage. Implement counterattacks and strategies designed to take your assailant off-guard. Lastly, never accept surrender. If you can breathe, you can fight. Do what you must to survive. The only way to combat violence is with violence. You must recognize and react violently. The appropriate response to the first seven seconds of an assault is critical for survival. Escaping to safety is your goal.
