From Proposal to Wedding Day - Wedding Entertainment

In this season of wedding planning, look here for answers on how to go from "I will" to "I do" without the stress and mishaps. This week: A different kind of wedding entertainment.

I love fashion and I love art. But I am never one to follow trends. I understand that fashion magazines and designers must “create” trends so they don’t sell the same dress over and over. But it infuriates me when bridal magazines fall for the same trend-talk. “This summer’s hot colors for weddings are …candy buffets are so over... new trend for your favors is …” I refuse to give in and luckily very few brides that I work with get sold on that either.

Whatever you do or don’t do for your wedding is absolutely 100 percent up to you. Your wedding is a compilation, a final reveal of what the two of you are like. It shows your quirks, hobbies, favorite flowers. It is a great chance to tastefully mesh your personalities and present them to your loved ones in one masterfully put together event of your lifetime.

And as long as you don’t put your guests in danger, the sky is the limit! Hence this post about not obeying trends and doing things slightly differently.

Once in a while I get requests from my clients for a unique performance to highlight their wedding day. These performances are great during dinner or as ambiance setting prelude to your dinner reception.

I have arranged for fire performers (absolutely breathtaking and yes--very safe!), contortion performers, magical looking gymnasts enclosed in a bubble, hanging from the ceiling aerial artists, bartenders on a jumping boots, etc.

There are also the famous human strolling tables used a lot during cocktail hour or to distribute desserts after dinner. They are fun and totally unexpected.

When hiring multiple performers, you’re better off hiring a company that represents various artists. This way you are guaranteed that these artists worked together in the past, can relate and interact with each other during the act and will create a cohesive and artistic ensemble.

It is especially important to hire the best of the best, since all eyes will be on this specialty act. Don’t just hire performers to do “tricks.” If you hire an artist, you will be blown away and so will your guests. There’s a fine line between a circus act and an inspired, tasteful performance.

And on the technical side, make sure that all of your performers are insured. A lot of venues require to be added as an additional insured on the performers’ insurance certificate, especially when dealing with fire performers.

And if you want to arrive on an elephant or be lowered on a silk from the ceiling, that also can be done! It is your wedding and your vision, so have a little fun with it!

In my next blog, I’ll share some insights on catering and food selection. Yumm! In the meantime – happy wedding planning!
