Hurricane Hits Home

I've always enjoyed a good summer storm. But this is crazy. Used to enjoy being all cuddled up and warm inside watching a good movie with the sound of a summer rain on the roof outside.

I've always enjoyed a good summer storm....but this is crazy.  Used to enjoy being all cuddled up and warm inside watching a good movie with the sound of a summer rain on the roof outside.  But this? This is more like huddling in the basement, glued to the TV for weather updates and all hell breaking loose outside. Trees shaking violently, basement flooded, backyard a lake, flashlights at the ready.....this is no summer rain.

This was our first hurricane, and I have a new found respect for mother nature, for the people of Florida and Louisiana and places like that that deal with this sort of thing regularly.

We slept (to the extent you could even call it sleeping with one eye open) in the basement for fear of trees coming down. We figured the basement was our best bet.  Our dogs - Sammy and Booty - were never far, crouched under the table and shaking the whole time. Dogs aren't stupid...they can recognize a dangerous situation.

And then when morning hit and things calmed down a bit and we took stock of the damage we realized it was as bad as we thought. And the images on the TV screen showing the effects of Hurricane Irene in the tristate area confirmed what we suspected...this was bad, really really bad.

But we survived, and we played a good game of Monopoly and we have stories to tell. The week that our house was hit by both an earthquake and a hurricane. WOW!!
