No Shelter for Millburn

No Shelter for Millburn / Short Hills residents.

My frustration has reached it's limit. During a natural disaster where we are in a "state of emergency" our town has no official shelter.

Day 8 with no heat no hot water no electricity limited gasoline.

Fact - we are told to go to the Essex County Shelter at the Cody Arena.

Fact- The Cody Arena shelter Capacity 150 was closed due to lack of heat on Day 3 and moved to the Turtle Back Zoo educational center (Capacity 30-40)

Fact- Red Cross has a house in the center of town with power and it's doors are locked closed they moved to Summit.

Fact- After meeting in person with Timothy Gordon our Town Administrator - (a paid position) (email tgordon@milburntwp.org) I expressed our town needed a shelter he said he would look into it. Never got back to me so I visited him this morning along with seeing our newly elected mayor and was told:

A) the Board of Ed would not approve the use of the High School Gym or the Middle School Gym or any other Gym for a shelter for our residence in our community.

B) They don't want to bother setting it up at this point and staff it because - and I quote Mr. Gordon "I have bigger concerns" (like another storm coming maybe?)

Frankly I'm outraged that during this time of perill and need for many of my fellow neighbors -some who are old and who can't care for themselves- that this buracracy exsists.  Where is our Community?

This is a State of Emergency and although I'm sure they will tell you that the Library, Bauer, Gero is open until maybe 9pm - then what?  Get a hotel? Sleep in the cold for a second week in a row?  It's unacceptable to me that as town officials and tax paying residents are incapable of cutting through the bullshit redtape and serve free hot coffee, food, wifi, and offer a warm place to sleep shower with electricity in whats one of the wealthest communities in the area.  Summit has had their middle school set up as a shelter since day 1.  Livingston high school another.  So what is wrong with the township of Millburn/Short Hills?  Incompetance with a Capital "I" - and a Board of Ed who says no you can't use our school Gym and Township officials who and I quote Mr. Gordon again "will NOT supercede their decision to create an official shelter for our Town and community."  I'm done. -  This guy Timothy Gordon needs to go and we need action now -today.

What I don't think they realize is if one more really bad storm happens - the electric work stops - things get worse and there is no emergency contigency plan or shelter in Millburn Township other than what private entities like local Churches and Synagogues are offering.
