Now that we've entered the first month of summer, chances are you're preparing for the warmer days ahead by breaking out the lawn care equipment, updating wardrobes and tending to early sprouts in the garden. While these steps are all important, many of us overlook one very imperative group when it comes to preparing for the higher temps – our pets.  It’s true that many dogs feel most at-home while outside, but it’s critical that we owners take the proper steps to ensure a happy and healthy spring.

According to the knowledgeable pet experts at the local Short Hills Pet Supplies Plus, there are several safety measures we can take to prepare our furry friends for the great outdoors.

  • Flee the flea: If your dog is not on year-round flea and tick preventatives, the warmer weather is your signal to begin administering them. Also, after playing outdoors or hiking with your dog, check his or her entire body for ticks so that they can be removed immediately.
  • Just say no…to heartworm: Dogs are far more susceptible to heartworm and lime disease in the spring and summer than any other time of the year. Schedule a vet exam to ensure your dog is heartworm-free – a necessary step before a prescription can be written for preventatives.
  • Get your pet an 'ID microchip’: Pets are sure to get loose this summer, so it’s critical to get your dog an ID microchip and a collar with a tag bearing your home address and cell phone number.
  • Shed those pounds: Like humans, there’s a good chance area pets have packed on a few pounds this past winter. Consider switching your pet’s diet to a strictly natural, organic diet.
  • Get grooming: While you should always be sure to groom your dog, it’s especially important during the warm weather in order to prevent overheating. Hair that is too long or too short can inhibit your pet’s ability to regulate their body temperature. Invest in a de-shedding tool such as a Furminator or schedule a trip to the groomer for a wash and trim.
  • Planting Prep: Summer's beautiful flowers and blooming gardens can also be hazardous to your pet’s health. Learn about pet-toxic plants and pet-safe gardening strategies.
  • Summer Fashion, Dog-style: Freshen up your dog’s wardrobe with colorful new raingear and paw protectors.
